3D scanning in medicine
Our 3D service is used in many different ways in the medical sector. For example, for designing and creating customized prosthetic and orthopaedic devices that have to take the patient’s individual anatomy into account. The 3D scanners used are naturally safe for scanning people and can deliver extremely precise results. As a 3D service provider, we can also offer our services in plastic surgery to produce customized implants and simulate operation and outcome scenarios.
Example of a prosthetic leg
Task: To produce a leg prosthesis that looks as realistic as the healthy leg, offers the best possible wearing comfort and makes life worth living again. In such a case, the healthy leg is scanned in 3D and a scan of the injured leg is taken. The scan of the injured leg is used as a template to make the prosthesis as lifelike as possible. The scans are made in high resolution and serve as a template for a 3D prosthesis maker in the subsequent work steps. Once the 3D model has been completed, the prosthesis is then printed using a 3D printer.
Example ear prosthesis
In the event of an ear malformation or after an accident, it may be necessary to make an ear prosthesis. With the help of a high-resolution 3D scanner, both the defective side and the intact side are recorded. The two 3D scans are used to create a suitable digital ear. This is then brought to reality in the 3D printer and serves as a template for the modulation of the new ear in the operating theater.
In certain cases, it may also be necessary to scan implants. We also take care of this. It falls under our industrial products division.
Example medical study

For example, we capture the skin of test subjects in 3D for study purposes and prepare the 3D scans for the various media as required. As a result, entire parts of the body can be analyzed in very high resolution in 3D, even on mobile devices.
Advantages of optical 3D measurement in the medical field
You receive a very precise 3D measurement of the required areas. We scan with an accuracy of 0.05 mm.
If required, the data obtained can be created into precise continuous surfaces using reverse engineering. These can then be further processed for you using standard CAD programs. For example, prostheses can be produced with unprecedented precision.
One of the other advantages of 3D scanning in the medical field is that it is contactless. The scan is created with a laser scanner without having to place markers etc.. The time-consuming work with plaster casts is therefore a thing of the past.
Depending on the application, we can scan different areas of the human body in 3D. In each case directly from the patient: For example, the body, foot, arm, hand and leg.
