3D scan component measurement compared to classic measurement methods
Traditionally, components are measured using tactile coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) – a precise but time-consuming process. Optical 3D component measurement offers decisive advantages here: it is faster, contactless and captures even complex geometries completely. In industrial quality assurance in particular, this means greater efficiency, lower costs and better traceability.
👉 You can see the differences at a glance in the table:
| Criterion | Optical 3D scan | Tactile measurement (CMM) |
|---|---|---|
| Measuring time | very fast (areas) | slow (point-based) |
| geometry | Complex free forms | ideal for few reference points |
| Contact | contactless | touching (risk with sensitive parts) |
| output | Point cloud, STL, report, CAD | Measurement report, CAD comparison optional |
| Series QA | very good (repeatable) | good, but time-consuming |
Sample data for download – check our scan and CAD quality

Your data will be treated confidentially and will not be passed on to third parties.
Technical basics of industrial 3D scanning
Our 3D scans for industry are based on optical stripe light and blue light processes. Objects are captured without contact and mapped in a high-density point cloud. This raw data forms the basis for dimensional checks, CAD models and production processes.
-
Scans without targets – modern systems work markerless → faster & more accurate
-
Flexibly scalable – small parts, but also large components or assemblies
-
Industrial precision – up to 0.01 mm accuracy, reliably reproducible
👉 Advantage: Even complex geometries or reflective surfaces can be captured – with the right combination of scanner, preparation and software.
From the point cloud to the CAD model
An industrial scanning process does not end with the point cloud – data preparation for the subsequent workflow is crucial:
-
Point cloud – millions of measuring points capture geometry & surface.
-
Polygon mesh (STL/OBJ) – data is cleaned, smoothed and made usable for CAD.
-
Reverse engineering (STEP/IGES) – reverse engineering to provide exact CAD models for CAM, design or simulation.
-
Documentation & reports – target/actual comparisons, dimensional checks or test reports for quality control.
👉 This means that our scans can be integrated directly into existing CAD/PLM processes.
Optical measurement of components in 3D
Optical 3D component measurement is a central component of our industrial services. We use high-resolution structured-light and blue-light scanners to capture components of any size without contact and in great detail. This creates precise digital images that serve as the basis for quality assurance, reverse engineering and production.
Compared to conventional measuring methods, optical measurement offers decisive advantages:
-
✅ Highest accuracy up to 0.01 mm, even with complex geometries
-
✅ Gentle detection – even sensitive or valuable objects can be inspected
-
✅ Fast availability – data and measurement reports are available within a few days
-
✅ Flexible use – from small prototypes to large tools and assemblies
Typical areas of application are dimensional inspection in series production, documentation of initial sample inspections or digital archiving of components. Optical measurement is also indispensable for tool correction or the adaptation of existing designs.
In this way, we create the basis for our customers to make their production processes more efficient, transparent and future-proof.
Special features in industrial use
The difference to a simple product scan lies in the integration into the industrial production chain. Typical requirements are
-
Series measurement: Repeatable tests for series production and QA
-
Component comparison: Determination of deviations from target geometry
-
Life cycle documentation: recording components at various stages
-
Retrofit & spare parts: Digitization of old parts without CAD data
-
Process optimization: Identification of deviations in the production process

Challenges in 3D scanning from the industry
An industrial 3D scan does not end with data acquisition – reliability within the framework of applicable standards and the ability to digitize even difficult surfaces are crucial.
🔎 Challenges from the field
Not every component is easy to scan – we have solutions for typical problem cases:
-
Shiny or reflective surfaces → Treatment with scan spray
-
Transparent materials (glass, acrylic) → Special pre-treatment or indirect scanning methods
-
Very small or complex geometries → High-end scanner with up to 0.01 mm accuracy
-
Large, non-transportable objects → Mobile 3D scanning with strip light systems on site
👉 We combine technical experience and practical solutions to ensure that even difficult components are reliably detected.

Examples of 3D industrial scans
The items below are typical of many items that we receive from the industry for 3D scanning. Due to the geometry, capturing the dimensions using conventional methods is very time-consuming and not particularly accurate. We scan such items in 3D with an accuracy of 0.01 mm. To ensure that work can be continued quickly at the customer’s premises, we can also carry out reverse engineering on request. With the data supplied by us, our customers can continue their work immediately. We can often complete such work in 1 day (scan and 3D data delivery only) or even in 2 days (including reverse engineering) if there is a particular urgency.
