Project Description

3D scan Barbarossa head

Here we have scanned a 900-year-old historical relic from Germany with the name “Barbarossa head” or “Cappenberg head”. The Cappenberg/Barbarossa head is a head reliquary dedicated to St. John the Evangelist. The gilded bronze figure was commissioned by Otto von Cappenberg before 1158 and placed in the then collegiate church of St. John the Evangelist of Cappenberg Monastery. It can be found in the church treasury of today’s Catholic parish church of St. John the Evangelist. In 1886, Friedrich Philippi hypothesized that it was a more or less realistic portrait bust of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa.
