Modeling bike racks in 3D

The remodeling of an existing bicycle rack for a car was an exciting project that combined design, functionality and technical innovation. The goal was to accurately recreate the original bike rack, which was available to us in the studio, in 3D while realistically depicting its functions. The project included both precise digital reconstruction and animation of the mechanics.

3D modeling of the design and development process:

  1. Analysis of the original: The existing bike rack was inspected and measured in detail to record all relevant details and functions. The focus was on:
    • The exact dimensions of the frame.
    • The materials and surface structures.
    • The mechanics and the moving parts.
  2. 3D modeling: The modeling was implemented using CAD software. The following steps were carried out:
    • Frame construction: Exact replica of the main frame based on the dimensions of the original.
    • Clamping system: Detailed reconstruction of the clamps that hold the bikes securely.
    • Folding mechanism: Modeling of the mechanism that enables the folding of the carrier.
    • Details: Reproduction of protective pads, seat belts and other small components.
  3. Animation and function test: In order to present the functionality realistically, care was taken to show the important functions in the animation.
    • Mounting the carrier on the vehicle.
    • Attachments of a bicycle.
    • Folding in the carrier for storage.
  4. Rendering: The finished model was rendered with realistic lighting and texturing to emphasize the details of the original.

Special functions 3D:

  • Exact replica: The model corresponds to the original carrier in terms of shape, dimensions and functionality.
  • Simple attachment: The carrier can be mounted on the car without additional tools.
  • Folding mechanism: For easy storage.
  • Adaptability: Can be used for different bike types and frame sizes.

Results: The project ended with a fully modeled and animated bike rack that faithfully represents the original. The realistic representation enables potential users and manufacturers to evaluate the functions and design. The model also provides a basis for further optimizations and adjustments.
